A simple, evil idea for DMs

After running a campaign for a while, you will undoubtedly come to a point where your heroes are not threatened by normal enemies, but tossing an ever increasingly powerful array of unusual beasts at them does not fit into the story. As the DM it is your job to keep your players entertained, and honestly they probably will get bored if they start steamrolling everything you throw at them without thought.

Which is why its useful to have some special encounters set aside for breaking up the monotony of a stagnating campaign. Some brief guidelines, the encounter should encourage a different way of thinking to be successful, but also should not cause swift or immediate death from acting in their typical manner. You need to give them a chance to realize their old tricks won’t work.

Which brings me to an interesting idea. Golems have been shown to be able to be made from any material, so you could theoretically make a Golem out of say, a voodoo doll. You could go about introducing them in one of two ways, you could set the Golems out loose and the party suffers from their effects until they hunt them down and capture them, or you could send them out to attack the party, causing all sorts of confusion during the fight.

I’d lean toward the second myself, some players are a little dense and might think you are just randomly smiting them rather than that someone out there in the world is up to something.
